Altior Gets the Nod to Join the Queen Mother Champion Chase

After reports of being lame last Monday, crowd favourite Altior will be joining Wednesday’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. According to trainer Nicky Henderson, the 7-year-old Irish-bred Thoroughbred was able to overcome a late injury scare and will be able to join the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday.

Also joining the competition include top contenders Douvan and Min under the wing of Willie Mullins while Black Corton will be competing in the Ladies’ Day RSA Chase with Bryony Frost as the rider. Last year’s festival was a victory for Altior as he was able to beat Min in the Arkle Chase with a record over hurdles and fences of 12 wins from 12 races.

Douvan was only able to finish seventh place and was surprisingly beaten by Special Tiara ending the undefeated crown favourite’s record run. This was touted to be one of the biggest upsets at the Cheltenham Festival for many years. Top jockey Ruby Walsh however still believes that the eight-year-old can win the race.

Here are the upcoming events on Wednesday:

13:30: Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle 2m 5f

14:10: RSA Steeple Chase 3m ½f

14:50: Coral Cup (handicap hurdle) 2m 5f
