Feb 28, 2023 | Football

Lionel Messi has been chosen as the best player in the world in 2022 – an honor he has received for the seventh time in his career. At The Best ceremony held at Salle Pleyel in Paris on Monday, Messi was presented with the trophy. His brilliant performance defending Argentina, which resulted in the 2022 global championship title, was a determining factor for his selection as the best player in the world.

“It’s been a tremendous year and it’s an honour for me to be here and win this award. Without my team-mates I wouldn’t be here.

“I achieved the dream I had been hoping for for so long. Very few people can achieve that and I have been lucky to do so.”

In the championship, he scored seven goals – two in the final against France – provided three assists and was elected the tournament’s best player.

This is the seventh time that Messi has won the award, two more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Following them are Zidane and Ronaldo Fenômeno, with three each. At 35 years old, the Argentine star becomes the oldest player to be elected by FIFA as the best on the planet.

Seven is also the same number of Ballon d’Or titles he has.
