The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement with All-Star guard Anthony Edwards on a five-year designated rookie maximum contract extension. This lucrative deal has the potential to reach an impressive value of $260 million.
Since being selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Anthony Edwards has shown remarkable growth as an explosive offensive player. In his third season, he has been averaging an impressive 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists.
At just 21 years old, Edwards has become the go-to player for the Minnesota Timberwolves, particularly in high-pressure moments. During last season’s playoff series against the eventual champions, the Denver Nuggets, he averaged over 31 points per game.
Edwards has already made a significant mark in NBA history by scoring the fourth-most points by a player before turning 22 years old, trailing only LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony on that prestigious list. Additionally, he is the only player in the league to have recorded 1,500 points and 100 steals in each of the past two seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
Joining the likes of Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana), LaMelo Ball (Charlotte), and Desmond Bane (Memphis), Edwards becomes the fourth member of his draft class to secure a max contract extension. It has been reported that Edwards, Haliburton, and Ball have All-NBA escalator clauses that could potentially increase their guaranteed contracts from $207 million to an impressive $260 million.
