NBA history continues to be made. On Saturday (8), the San Antonio Spurs announced that legendary coach Gregg Popovich will remain in charge of the team.
With the contract renewal, Popovich becomes the highest-paid coach of all time.
Since 1996, Gregg Popovich has been the coach of the Spurs, and he is heading into his 28th season leading the Texas team. At 74 years old, he holds the record for the coach with the most wins in NBA history. With the signing of a new contract, that position becomes even harder for other coaches to reach.
Popovich renewed his contract for another five years in a deal worth $80 million, according to ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski.
With the new agreement, Gregg Popovich surpasses Monty Williams, who had previously secured the largest contract in history by signing with the Detroit Pistons for $78.5 million (equivalent to R$ 393.6 million) over six years.
The contract extension also increases the expectations of San Antonio fans, as they will see the team’s new star, Victor Wembanyama, the first overall pick in the draft, being coached by the legendary franchise coach.
Under the watchful eye of the future coach, Wembanyama made his debut on Friday (7) in the Spurs’ victory over the Charlotte Hornets in the Summer League.
