In the main event of UFC 292, held this Saturday (19), Sean O’Malley established himself as the new bantamweight champion of the organization! In a spectacular performance, he defeated Aljamain Sterling via technical knockout in the second round.
After a relatively uneventful first round, the second round brought a turnaround. Sterling attempted a series of punches, which created an opportunity for an incredible right hook from O’Malley, knocking down the reigning champion in under 30 seconds.
From that point on, Sean didn’t let up, unleashing an impressive sequence of punches to Sterling’s face, leading to the referee’s interruption due to a technical knockout at 51 seconds into the second round.
After the fight, the new champion shared his emotions about claiming the title and praised Sterling as the “best bantamweight in history.”
“It’s great, I feel great. Honestly, it was the most nervous I’ve ever been for a fight. To me, Sterling is the best bantamweight in history. But I never lost confidence in that right hand, baby,” he said.
“Coming into this fight I said all it takes is one mistake against me. I don’t even know if that was a mistake, it’s just that I’m damn good,” he concluded.
