Liverpool’s center-back, Virgil van Dijk, has been formally accused of improper conduct and faces the possibility of an extended suspension following his red card during the match against Newcastle last Sunday.
In a remarkable turn of events at St James’ Park, Darwin Nunez emerged from the substitutes’ bench to score two goals, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory for Liverpool in the Premier League. Despite facing adversity after Van Dijk’s first-half dismissal, the team rebounded effectively.
Van Dijk, who serves as the captain of Liverpool, received a red card from referee John Brooks for a foul on Alexander Isak just outside the penalty area. The VAR system upheld the referee’s decision, leading to a temporary pause in play. As Van Dijk exited the field at a leisurely pace, he engaged in a confrontation with fourth official Craig Pawson.
The specific charge against Van Dijk alleges that he “behaved improperly and/or utilized abusive and/or offensive language towards a match official subsequent to his ejection in the 29th minute.” The Netherlands international has until Friday to provide a formal response to this charge.
Consequently, Van Dijk will be absent from Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League clash against Aston Villa, which is scheduled to take place at their home stadium. Depending on the potential extension of his suspension, he may also be ineligible to participate in the subsequent match against Wolves on Saturday, September 16th.
