Manchester United face the prospect of being without André Onana for up to a month in the upcoming year as the goalkeeper has confirmed his return to international duty with Cameroon.
Onana, who transferred to Old Trafford from Inter this summer, has not represented Cameroon since he left the squad during their World Cup campaign in Qatar.
However, the 27-year-old has now accepted a call-up, potentially requiring United to release their first-choice goalkeeper for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to begin in Ivory Coast in January.
“In the world of football, as in life, there are pivotal moments that demand significant choices to be made,” Onana stated in a message posted on social media on Monday.
“In recent months, I have faced trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet my unwavering love and connection to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact.
“My desire to represent my country has never wavered since my youth, and this aspiration is an integral part of my identity. Nothing and no one can shake this conviction. I respond to my nation’s call with unwavering certainty, recognizing that my return is not only to honor my dream but also to meet the expectations and receive the support of Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.”
Cameroon has not yet secured a place in the tournament, which was postponed for a year from 2023, and will face Burundi in a final qualifier on September 12.
The AFCON tournament runs from January 13 to February 11, which means Onana could potentially miss four Premier League games.
The former Ajax goalkeeper has not played for his country since the first World Cup match against Switzerland. He was omitted from the squad for Cameroon’s second game against Serbia before returning home early. Onana had announced his international retirement in December, citing a disagreement with head coach Rigobert Song.
