Inter Miami experienced their first defeat in over two months this Saturday in the MLS. The team, led by Tata Martino, played without the presence of Lionel Messi, who was rested, and was defeated 5-2 by Atlanta United, playing away from home. Jordi Alba was also unavailable, while Sergio Busquets started the match. Inter Miami’s goals were scored by Campana, while Muyumba, Miller (with an own goal), Lennon, Giakoumakis, and Wolff found the net for Atlanta United.
Atlanta United, currently with 45 points, is in the sixth position in the Eastern Conference and is on track for a direct spot in the round of 16. Meanwhile, Inter Miami sits in 14th place with only 28 points, trailing the DC United by six points, who are in the playoff qualification zone.
Inter Miami’s last defeat occurred on July 15th against Saint Louis City. Since then, the team had a positive streak and clinched the Copa de las Ligas title undefeated. Upon their return to the MLS, they secured victories against RB New York, Los Angeles FC, and Sporting Kansas City, in addition to a draw against Nashville SC.
Messi’s team has a final ahead on September 27th, facing Houston Dynamo in the US Open Cup. Before that, they will take on Toronto FC and Orlando City in the MLS.
