Jenni Hermoso Excluded from Spain’s Women’s National Team Amid Controversy

by | Sep 19, 2023 | Football

The new head coach of the Spanish women’s national team, Montse Tomé, has chosen not to include Jenni Hermoso in the list of players called up for the team’s games in the Nations League. Jenni Hermoso had reported an incident of forced kissing involving Luis Rubiales, who was the president of the Spanish Football Federation at the time, leading to his resignation.

The Spanish national team coach expressed confidence in the players she called up, highlighting their professionalism and experience. She selected 15 out of the 23 athletes who were part of the victorious team in the Women’s World Cup, where Spain defeated England in Australia.

Following the reported incident of forced kissing by Hermoso, several Spanish players made it clear that they would not represent the national team unless structural changes were made.

On September 5th, head coach Jorge Vilda, who was responsible for the World Cup title, was dismissed from his position.

Here is the list of players called up for Spain’s games:

Goalkeepers: Misa Rodríguez, Cata Coll, Enith Salón

Defenders: Irene Paredes, Laia Alexandri, María Méndez, Oihane Hernández, Olga Carmona, Ona Batlle, María León

Midfielders: Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, Patri Guijarro, María Pérez, Tere Abelleira, Rosa Márquez

Forwards: Athenea del Castillo, Esther González, Eva Navarro, Mariona Caldentey, Inma Gabarro, Amaiur Sarriegi, and Lucía García.
