Carlos Alcaraz, a dominant figure in the tennis world currently, has confirmed his participation in the tenth edition of the Rio Open, taking place from February 17th to 25th at the Jockey Club. The Spanish player, ranked as the second-best in the world, is returning to the Rio clay, where he secured his first ATP 500 title at the age of 18. This prestigious South American tennis tournament will be broadcast live on Sportv.
Alcaraz expressed his joy in participating in the 2024 Rio Open, considering it a special tournament in his career. He shared his attachment to the event, where he achieved his first ATP tournament victory and also his first ATP 500 title. He highlighted the special connection he has developed with fans in Rio de Janeiro and his excitement to return.
This will be the fourth time Alcaraz competes on the Rio clay, where he not only won the title in 2022 but also made his ATP tournament main draw debut and secured his first ATP tournament victory in 2020. Currently, Alcaraz is ranked second in the world, trailing only Novak Djokovic, with 8,535 points.
Rio Open Director Luiz Carvalho emphasized that the tournament has been a launching pad for other young tennis prospects, including players who reached the Top 10 in the world rankings, such as Gael Monfils and Wilfred Tsonga. He praised Alcaraz as an integral part of the tournament’s history and expressed his satisfaction with the Rio Open’s role in the Spanish player’s successful journey.
Carlos Alcaraz won his first ATP 500 title at the Rio Open in 2022 at the age of 18 and has since continued to collect successes, including victories at the Indian Wells, Miami, and Barcelona Masters 1000 events. He also clinched his first Grand Slam title at the US Open and became the youngest world number 1 in history.
In 2023, Alcaraz claimed the ATP 250 Buenos Aires, ATP 500 Queen’s, and Indian Wells Masters 1000 titles, as well as Wimbledon, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in an epic final. Now, everyone eagerly awaits to see what the future holds for Carlos Alcaraz in 2024.
