Center Joel Embiid has chosen to represent the United States at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Embiid, who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers and is the current NBA MVP, also had the option to play for the Cameroon national team or France. The news was reported by “The Athletic” website.
Although he was born in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, Joel Embiid moved to the United States at the age of 16 to pursue his basketball career.
In July 2022, the center was granted French citizenship as a “foreigner whose naturalization is of exceptional interest.” Subsequently, in September of the same year, he also became a citizen of the United States.
Embiid’s inclusion further strengthens the United States’ national team, which will be known as the new “Dream Team” for the Paris Olympics. Other NBA stars, such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, have already confirmed their participation on the team.
The decision of many NBA stars to represent the United States at the Olympics came after the team’s underwhelming performance at the last FIBA World Cup. With a roster lacking major stars, the team finished only in fourth place.
