On Saturday, Inter Miami was defeated by FC Cincinnati 1-0 in a match of the 37th round of the MLS Regular Season. Lionel Messi, who had been sidelined since September 20th due to a muscular discomfort, returned to the team, but his side conceded a goal by Álvaro Barreal in the 33rd minute of the second half. This loss marks Inter Miami’s 16th defeat in the competition. Messi started the game on the bench and came on the field at the ninth minute of the second half.
During Messi’s absence, Inter Miami had an inconsistent performance with two losses and two draws in four games. Even with the return of the Argentine star, the team couldn’t avoid another defeat.
With this result, Inter Miami remains in the 14th position out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, accumulating 34 points. The team no longer has a chance to qualify for the playoffs. On the other hand, FC Cincinnati leads the conference with 66 points so far. In the next round, Inter Miami will face Charlotte FC, while FC Cincinnati will play against Atlanta United.
