Former striker Wayne Rooney is no longer the coach of DC United, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. He terminated his contract this Saturday after his team’s 2-0 victory over New York City FC. DC United no longer has a chance to advance to the MLS playoffs.
Jason Levien, the club’s CEO, stated, “This decision paves the way for our next generation of coaches to have the opportunity to bring a new philosophy and structure to our operations. We talked to Wayne and agreed that it was best for us to go in different directions now.”
Wayne Rooney took over as DC United’s coach in July of last year, following his two-year stint at Derby County. According to the British media, Rooney plans to return to British football.
Rooney commented, “It’s the right time. I believe I’ve done everything I could to get the team to the playoffs. It’s about the timing in my career. I feel it’s the right time to return to England. What lies ahead, I don’t know.”
Under Rooney’s leadership, DC United achieved 11 wins in 36 games in 2023, along with 10 draws and 15 losses.
