Wayne Rooney has secured a new position as a coach at Birmingham in the English second division, as announced this Wednesday. The former Manchester United striker has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the club.
Rooney’s move came after his departure from DC United in Major League Soccer (MLS) last week. He terminated his contract after his team’s 2-0 victory over New York City FC. DC United no longer has a chance to qualify for the MLS playoffs.
Rooney joined DC United in July 2022, following two years as the coach of Derby County, also in the English second division.
Garry Cook, Birmingham’s director, expressed enthusiasm about Wayne Rooney’s arrival: “We are very excited about Wayne’s arrival. When the opportunity arises to hire a coach who shares our ambitions, is a student of the game, and is a legend, you act. And that’s exactly what we did.”
At his new club, Rooney will have Ashley Cole, former Chelsea full-back, as his assistant, along with John O’Shea, a former defender and a former teammate at Manchester United.
Currently, Birmingham occupies the sixth position in the English second division, aiming to return to the Premier League after 12 years.
