The 3-1 victory over Italy on Tuesday had a special meaning for forward Harry Kane. In addition to England securing their place in the 2024 Euro Cup, Kane became England’s all-time top scorer since March, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s 53 goals.
With his two goals against Italy, he also became the top scorer for the national team at Wembley, with a total of 24 goals, surpassing the legendary Bobby Charlton.
Furthermore, Kane has been directly involved in 32 goals in the last 30 national team games, either scoring or providing assists in 10 of the most recent matches.
The England captain stated, “Sometimes we make the qualifiers seem easy, but they are very difficult. In recent years, we’ve seen great teams miss out on major tournaments. It was a very tough group. Credit to the lads. Achieving this with two games to spare shows the direction we are heading. Wembley is our home, and we’ve turned it into a fortress in recent years.”
England has suffered only one defeat in the last 63 qualifiers for major tournaments (Euro Cup or World Cup) and remains unbeaten at home for 36 matches (32 wins and four draws).
Despite his two crucial goals in the victory over Italy, Harry Kane was not chosen as the Man of the Match by the fans. The award went to midfielder Bellingham, who won a penalty and provided an assist for Rashford’s goal, receiving enthusiastic applause from the Wembley crowd.
Bellingham commented, “I’m loving every minute of football. My coaches at the club, like Carlo Ancelotti, and with the national team, under Gareth Southgate, give me the freedom to play as I see fit. We have the skill and talent to go far, and we should aim for victory next year.”
The Real Madrid player has been directly involved in 16 goals in 13 games since the start of the 2023/24 season, for both the club and the national team, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists.
The England national team coach praised Bellingham’s mentality, highlighting his maturity and intelligence despite his young age.
