Six jerseys worn by Messi in the 2022 World Cup will be auctioned by Sotheby’s, with an estimated total value of 10 million dollars. The expectation is that this set will surpass the current record for a sports item auctioned, currently held by Michael Jordan, whose NBA Finals jersey from 1998 was sold for 10.1 million dollars in September 2022.
The most expensive football jersey ever auctioned was Maradona’s, worn in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup against England, which was auctioned for 9.3 million dollars in May 2022. Part of the proceeds from Messi’s jersey auction will be donated to the Hospital Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona, supporting children facing rare diseases.
The jerseys up for auction correspond to those worn by Messi in the first half of the final, the semifinal, the quarterfinal, the round of 16, and in two group stage matches.
